Tasting Notes: Grapefruit, Pomegranate, Apricot, Candied Pecan

We connected with this amazing new coffee through a chance meeting at our Charlotte Ave location with Kenny Ntwali of Higa Coffee.

Kenny, who is from Rwanda, studied in the US and is now splitting his time between the two countries, sourcing amazing coffees from East Africa and helping roasters like us build long-term partnerships with producers in the region. This is our first ever Rwandan coffee, and we are honored to be able to share it with our customers!

Vunga sits near the borders of Uganda to the North and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the West. This tiny station is located between the steep hills of Nyabihu District, and is a woman-owned and managed washing station.

It is managed by Daphrose Uwimana, who has created a close-knit community and mentors a group of women farmers that produces special women-grown lots. Daphrose founded the cooperative in 2009 and is the driving force behind the exceptional coffee coming out of this station.

what is the difference between single origin coffee and coffee blends?

single origin coffee comes from a specific geographic region, or in 8th & Roast’s case, a farm or family of farms. this allows for a dialed-in flavor profile that carries the trademark of the area where the coffee was grown, with elements like climate, elevation, and soil as factors. blends are created when our roasters combine coffees of a different origin and/or process in a deliberate way, creating a unique flavor profile.

where do you roast your beans?

our roasting facility and training lab is located in the heart of nashville at 2637 grandview ave. while it is not open to the public on a daily basis, it is where we host our community classes.

i want to learn more about coffee. do you offer classes?

we offer classes occasionally, with topics ranging from ‘coffee 101’ to ‘latte art’ to ‘home brewing and extraction.’ check out our classes page for the most updated information.

how do i store my coffee?

try to avoid heat, light, moisture, and oxygen to keep your beans at their freshest. our bags are designed for great storage, and we recommend keeping them in a dry, dark pantry for optimal storage. we don’t recommend storing beans in the refrigerator.

what is common voice?

Common Voice is the sister brand of 8th & Roast Coffee Co. originally launched by good citizen coffee, it is now part of the 8th & Roast family when we acquired the brands. common voice provides more people with access to boutique coffee and enables farmers to sell more of their available crops year after year. the resulting blends are produced and processed to the same standards as all our coffees.
